He is a highly respected senior aviation professional and one of the most influential voices representing airline pilots in India, with an exceptional 50 years of aviation experience spanning military flying, airline operations, regulatory oversight, and safety management. An alumnus of St Stephen’s College, Delhi, he joined the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot, serving 16.5 years and qualifying as an A-2 Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI). He also excelled in the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, reflecting a strong foundation in leadership and strategic thinking.
Transitioning to civil aviation, Capt Randhawa joined Air India, where he held key responsibilities across Flight Operations, Training, Crew Scheduling, Mumbai Airport, and Flight Dispatch. He served as a Fleet Captain and Examiner on the Airbus A-310 and Boeing 777, contributing materially to operational standards, training quality, and flight safety culture. His career further included two tenures with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) spanning nearly a decade, notably as Deputy Chief Flight Operations Inspector (Western Region), where he was deeply involved in regulatory oversight, audits, and operational approvals.
Widely known for his unwavering commitment to flight safety, professional integrity, and pilot welfare, Capt Randhawa has played a pivotal leadership role in shaping policy discourse on Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), fatigue risk management, licensing, training standards, and regulatory compliance. He has consistently engaged with the DGCA, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and other stakeholders, ensuring pilot-centric concerns are presented with technical rigor, operational realism, and alignment with international best practices.
As President, Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), he has been instrumental in positioning the organisation as a credible, non-adversarial, safety-focused professional body, distinct from trade unionism. Under his guidance, FIP has emerged as a trusted interlocutor between pilots, regulators, and policymakers, particularly during periods of regulatory transition, legal scrutiny, and heightened public attention to aviation safety.
